REMNANTS Launch Tour Stop #8 - Book Birthday!

Hello lovely readers! Welcome to stop #8 in Lisa T. Bergren's Remnants Launch Tour. I'm so thrilled to have Lisa, one of my all-time favorite authors(eeep!! She's so amazing!), guest posting on the blog today because it's the big release day for Remnants: Season of Wonder!

Happy Book Birthday to you!
*insert confetti, sparklers, and noise makers*

I was lucky enough to get an early read of Remnants and let me tell you, Lisa has done it again! Okay I won't say anything else. Nope. I'll leave the gushing for my review, which will be posted very soon ;)

Now, I think it's about time I hand things over to the wonderful Lisa T. Bergren!

MY FAVORITE BIRTHDAY MEMORY
by Lisa T. Bergren

Seven years ago, I had my favorite birthday EVER. Now my River of Time Tribe will be aghast, but it was in Florence, or Firenze, as they say in Italia (the enemies of the Sienese in my series). I was researching River and dragged my kids, hubby and parents along (okay, I didn’t really have to drag—they were pretty willing).

We spent a couple of nights in Florence, and I knew exactly where I wanted to have my birthday…at a wonderful, family-oriented trattoria called il Latina, in the northern part of the city, in which we’d had our very favorite meal the last time we’d been in Italy. It’s a place where the locals and tourists-in-the-know line up to wait for a table an hour before, milling about on the streets as the staff eat their dinner first, ignoring us through the window. Cured hams hang from the rafters. People are seated at tables together. There are no menus—the waiters just ask if you want the next thing and how many. White bean soup with truffle oil, antipasto, the hugest steaks I’ve ever seen anywhere that you need to share (a Florentine specialty, bistecca), wine served from communal jugs, limoncello to top it all off and dessert we couldn’t possibly eat.

Upon our return, a fellow at a nearby table played with my four-year-old, making monkey faces. The room was rife with animated conversation and laughter. My dad told stories about his childhood to my young children, sharing history as we made new history together. I adored being surrounded by my loved ones as I entered my fourth decade, and the night will forever be stamped in my memory.

In the end, the waiters brought out a dessert with a sparkler (that again, I couldn’t possibly eat), and they sang “Happy Birthday” in Italian and the night was marked with pure joy and celebration.

How will I celebrate my 50th in a few years? I’m thinking Tahiti. But Tim, my husband, wants to celebrate his in Italia. And we just might return to il Latina to celebrate.

But as they embark with the other Remnants on the first of their assignments, they quickly discover that the world beyond their protected Valley is more dangerous than they imagined.

The Sons of Sheol will stop at nothing to prevent Dri and Ronan from rescuing anyone sympathetic to the Remnants’ cause. And as the Remnants battle the demonic forces, still other enemies close in. Dangers intensity, but so do Dri’s feelings for Ronan–the one emotion she is not meant to feel. In the midst of their mission, Andriana must fine a way to master her feelings. Slowly getting back into blogging...

So much has happened during the last 3 months you guys! School was AMAZING and I'm still shocked that I'm finished. Like I told you all before, I started a Medical Assisting program and I fell in love with everything about it. I finished a week ago and miss it so much already lol! With all the great things going on I still really missed chatting with all of you. I'm so happy to have some time for blogging again!

It was really weird not being able to come on here, but it also helped to keep me focused on my studies. Now that I have some more time on my hands I can also get back to reading! I don't know how often I'll be able to post, but I'll definitely be hanging around more. I need to catch up on what's been going on with you all :) I hope 2014 has been good to you all so far. Now I'm gonna go do what I love most... read a good book.

What I've been up to...

Hey everyone! Oh my goodness... these past two weeks have been so CRAZY. I haven't blogged much because I started going to school for Medical Assisting. I said something about going back to school in August, but things didn't go as planned, so I ended up starting this month. My days are pretty long since I'm there from 8:00am - 5:00pm, so I haven't had much reading time. BOO!!

Anyway, I enjoy being at school so much and my days seem to go by a lot quicker than I expected because we're constantly moving around doing something. It's such a great feeling to know that this really is what I want to do. I've always wanted to be in the medical field but would sometimes doubt whether or not I could actually do it. These two weeks have shown me that I really can do this! :D Maybe one day I'll go back for RN, but for now I'm happy where I am.

Even with my busy schedule I still want to fit blogging in somewhere. I love it too much to stop, and I'd miss you guys like crazy! I'll definitely try to get some posts together this weekend to schedule for later. Weekly Giveaway Link-up, the new feature Melanie from Christian Bookshelf Reviews and I are hosting, will be posted every Monday. I hope you all find it helpful and use it to spread the word about your giveaways!!

So that's it for now. I hope you all have had a wonderful 2014 so far! Talk to you all later :)

The Ghost Runner by Jennifer Hartz

The Ghost Runner
by Jennifer Hartz
Desert Breeze Publishing (January 2014)
Source: from author in exchange for an honest review
Amazon | B&N

The boy was 8-years-old when he died. Decades later he came to play with us.

Almost every kid grows up playing with ghost runners, imaginary people who run the bases for you when you don't have enough kids to play. Twelve-year-old Chandler Dean is no exception, but nothing could surprise Chandler more than a real ghost joining the game.

Chandler must uncover the mystery of the ghost runner all the while dealing with middle school adolescence, including his best friend moving away and awkward interactions with a new crush. Chandler's search for answers uncovers both past and present tragedies. Is Chandler strong enough to endure why the ghost runner has come?

The Ghost Runner is Jennifer Hartz' newest release. This is definitely different from her other books I've read, but I liked it! It's a novella so it's quite short but that doesn't mean it left any less of an impact a full-length novel could have. It was heartbreaking and emotional with a touching reminder that beauty and hope can be found in the midst of tragedy.

The main character is 12 year old Chandler Dean. His mother passed away a couple years earlier and he has since taken up the responsibility of caring for both his younger siblings since his dad never was the same after his wife's passing. Chandler and his siblings seem to find an escape in playing kickball at a parking lot across the street from their house. That parking lot is where Chandler's search for answers begins after he meets a real ghost who seems to be connected to his family's past in some way.

I came to like Chandler a lot. His character was believable and I felt like I really could have been reading from the perspective of a 12 year old who had to grow up a little faster because of his circumstances. The way he took care of his younger brother and sister was really sweet and I loved reading the scenes when they were together. I did feel like his crush was moving a little too fast, mainly because they're only 12. I just thought they were a bit young.

I didn't expect a story like this when I first started reading it. I finished it in almost one sitting and it had me tearing up more than once. I also really liked the way it ended. Even though there was unexpected tragedy, the characters still find hope and peace. I thought it was beautiful. Jennifer has shown us once again that when it comes to bringing something new and different to the table, she can definitely pull it off!

About the author
Jennifer Hartz wrote and illustrated her first novel, an epic tale featuring winged fairies losing their magic wands to evil trolls, back when she was six years old. She has been a fan of fantasy and science fiction ever since. From the land of Mordor to a galaxy far, far away, Jennifer loves it all. Born in Pittsburgh, but currently living in northeast North Carolina with her amazing husband and beautiful son, Jennifer spends her days teaching, reading, and writing. The Future Savior series is Jennifer’s first crack at a novel since the early days of fairy wand heists and she couldn’t be more thrilled with its quick success.
