FS Week Day 2: Author Interview & Giveaway!

Welcome to day 2 of FS Week! Today we have an interview with Jennifer Hartz!  With this being the first ever author interview I've done, I was excited and nervous at the same time. Especially because it's with one of my favorite authors =D I hope you enjoy!

Thank you so much for being here today, Jennifer! Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet…

Oh wait, that's Dr. Evil's background. Okay, here's the stuff you need to know about me: I live in North Carolina, but if you call me a Southerner I'll have to kill you. I'm actually from Pittsburgh. I'm married and I've got the cutest little boy ever.

I love all things speculative. Sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, etc. I also love Jesus and the Bible. Many people think that these two loves would be at odds, but they're not. Read the Bible, the coolest parts are supernatural. I believe writing Speculative Christian Fiction is my calling. It's a passion and I love to do it.

What’s something people might be surprised to know about you?
Hmm… I am ridiculously competitive. You do not want to play any sort of game against me. Not only will the smack-talk fly, but I will win. Oh yes, I WILL win!

Evacuation will be your 3rd published book. Can you tell us your most rewarding experience since being published?
Honestly, the best example is Future Savior Week here on your blog! Having someone contact me and tell me how much they enjoyed Future Savior is freakin' awesome. I have fans! How crazy is that!

What was your favorite scene to write in Evacuation?
Definitely Shaw's history! You will learn all about Shaw in Book 3… I can't wait to hear what people think of him

What character in the Future Savior series do you connect with the most?
You know, if you would have asked me this question back during Book 1, I would have said Christina because she was loosely based on me. But she has morphed so much as the story progressed that she has become her own person. Currently, I'd have to say Drexton. He's had a pretty hard life, but holds strong to his faith. He hardly ever takes anything too seriously which is exactly like me. And he is passionate about the people he loves. Drexton has really become one of my favorites.

What appeals to you most about writing fiction?
I LOVE to write fiction… and not just regular fiction, but speculative fiction. This is also the genre I read and watch. I want to write, read, or watch things that do not happen in real life. I want to be transported to a galaxy far, far away, or lost somewhere in the woods of District Twelve, or riding on the Hogwarts Express, or making my way to the land of Mordor. Why would I want to write about stuff that happens in everyday life - BORING! Give me the fantastical!

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
I had writer's block pretty bad this summer. It wasn't that I didn't know what to write, I just couldn't get myself motivated to do it. Of course it didn't help that I was going through some pretty tough stuff personally, but once I got to the other side of it I was able to channel it into writing. I think it helped me reach some emotional pinnacles in writing.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpower to be?
Awesome question! I've always been a big fan of Rogue from X-men. Being able to "borrow" any power would be ideal… then I could try them ALL… yeah, that's the competitive side coming out

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I've always dreamed of living in Ireland. It just looks so beautiful there and so mystical. I really hope I can at least go on a nice vacation there someday.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to most this year??
THE HUNGER GAMES!!! I am a huge fan of these books and I cannot wait to see the movie. Goodness gracious, there's less than a month to go until it comes out… I'm so excited I just might pee my pants!!!

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Hanging out with my son or going out on the very rare date with my husband. I wish we could go out more, but we've got jobs and a three year old so the dates are rare.

What’s next for you?
I've got soooo many book ideas that I can hardly keep them all in my head. They all seem to be falling into the YA speculative/spiritual category. The one I'm currently working on involves six high school freshmen who discover that the demonic legend of the history of their school is actually true. I hope to finish writing that one within the next month or so. Keep your fingers crossed that I find a publisher!

Fingers crossed! Anything else you’d like to add? Where on the web can readers find you?
BECOME A PART OF THE STORY!!! I'd like to share an awesome prize I'm giving away in the very near future. If you buy a copy of Future Savior Three: Evacuation, you could win a chance at actually becoming a character in Future Savior Four: Desecration. Please visit my blog for details: http://jenniferhartz.com/blog
