A Reluctant Queen by Joan Wolf

My Rating: 4 stars
About the book -
An inspiring re-imagining of the tale of Esther, a young Jewish woman thrust from a life of obscurity into a life of power, wealth, intrigue . . . and tender love.

See the story of Esther in an entirely new way-with all the political intrigue and tension you remember, but told as a passionate and tender love story between a young man and woman. Misunderstood by many, King Xerxes was a powerful but lonely man. Esther's beauty caught the eye of the young king, but it was her spirit that captured his heart.

Imagine a new the story of Esther, one of our faith's great heroines, destined to play a key role in the history of Christianity.

My Review -
I’ve read the book of Esther a lot of times and have fallen in love with it over and over again. It's well known and a favorite of many. Now, when reading a book like A Reluctant Queen we need to remember that this is a fictionalized story that might not completely align with biblical accounts. I was hesitant to read it at first, but after seeing the liberties the author took with the story, I do think they were necessary to create this fictional romance novel.

The details of the time period and characters brought this story to life and made me feel like I was there experiencing it for myself. That's what I liked the most. Being able to envision myself right there with Esther, Mordecai, and King Ahasuerus. It was a fun journey seeing how Esther went from reluctantly becoming the King's wife, to loving him dearly. She didn't like lying to him about who she really was, but she knew what she had to do to save her people from being annihilated. She didn't understand how God could possibly use her to save the Jews, but she still went through with what her uncle asked her to do.

When an author is retelling a story from the bible they have to be careful with the things they add and leave out. There were some things I would have liked to see remain in this story, but I just try to see A Reluctant Queen for what it is. Fiction. I don't think anything could ever compare to the amazing story of Esther that we find in God's Word, but this was a very entertaining retelling of it and I really enjoyed reading it. This is a well written love story that will keep you turning the pages until the very end. Joan is a beautiful storyteller and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Did you know?
God's name isn't mentioned once in the book of Esther. BUT you can still see it is His hand working behind the scenes!
